  • Providing psychiatry consultation and liaison services for patients admitted to skilled nursing beds. Tomah VA Medical Center has over 150 skilled nursing beds, with multidisciplinary treatment teams providing specialized care for various needs such as rehabilitation, dementia, palliative care, and hospice care
  • Potential cross coverage of attending psychiatrist duties for our 11-bed acute inpatient psychiatry unit, working with a psychiatric nurse practitioner
  • Potential cross coverage of psychiatrist services to our residential rehabilitation programs. Tomah VA Medical Center has 80 residential beds, with treatment teams providing specialized treatment for PTSD, addictions, homelessness, and vocational rehabilitation
  • Potential provision of consultation to patients in acute inpatient medicine or to patients in urgent care
  • Providing written or verbal information for court processes regarding guardianship, protective placement, and/or court ordered treatment when applicable
  • Document in electronic patient records via typing or voice recognition software
  • Provide education about diagnoses and treatment to patients, families, and staff
  • Coordinate development of the Veteran’s treatment plan, incorporating input from the Veteran (as well as their family or significant others when appropriate), monitor treatment progress, and coordinate revisions to the treatment plan when necessary
  • Participate in organization/committee meetings as requested
  • Access the extraordinary VA system of services and supports available. For example, the facility has Suicide Prevention Coordinators who collaborate to identify patients at high risk for suicide to ensure they are provided with close monitoring and enhanced care

Major duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provide a full range of psycho-diagnostic services, including clinical assessment
  • Conduct structured clinical interviews and provide crisis intervention and comprehensive intake assessments
  • Provide clinical consultation to peers, supervisors, and hospital staff on a wide variety of patient care issues
  • Provide community based Veteran visits (Applies to Mental Health Intensive Case Management only)
